Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Technician II at Spitler Woods State Park for The Office of Land Management. This position will perform routine grounds maintenance and janitorial duties, plow snow, make plumbing and electrical repairs, paint signs, patch roads, operate chainsaws, and change oil and hydraulic fluid on vehicles and other equipment. Spitler Woods State Natural Area, a 200-acre site in Mt. Zion in Macon County, is home to one of the largest acreages of old growth woods in central Illinois. Much of the site is dedicated as Spitler Woods Nature Preserve, providing additional protection for the site's valuable natural features. Essential Functions

  • Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled maintenance and program support tasks at Spitler Woods, Lincoln Trail Homestead, and Calamus Lake NP.
  • Operates trucks, bushhogs, tree spades, woods mower, power augers, stump cutters while engaged in site maintenance, improvement, and construction projects.
  • Inspects public use areas for safety hazards.
  • Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and other equipment.
  • Performs minor repairs to buildings and structures.
  • Provides functional supervision, leadership, and direction to Conservation Workers, volunteers, and other site staff.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Two (2) years of experience in following written and oral instructions.
  • One (1) year of experience in informing visitors of site facilities, programs, rules, and regulations.
  • One (1) year of experience in outdoor recreation.
  • One (1) year of experience in groundskeeping.

Office of Land Management

The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

Work Hours:  Nov-Mar: Mon-Fri; Apr-Oct: Sun-Thur.; 7:30am-3:30pm (1/2 hr lunch) year round; Scheduling subject to change based on operational needs. The ability to work the in season holiday is required.
