A General Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg) Nurse plays a critical role in the healthcare team, typically working in hospitals or medical centers. This nurse is resp on sible for providing care to patients who are recovering from surgery or dealing with acute or chr on ic medical c on diti on s. Job Summary:
A Medical-Surgical Nurse provides direct care to patients in a general medical and surgical setting. These nurses manage a variety of medical c on diti on s, assist with post-operative recovery, and perform assessments, administer medicati on s, and ensure the comf ort and well-being of patients.

Patient Care:
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care needs.
M on itor vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturati on .
Provide preoperative and postoperative care to patients, including wound care and administering pain medicati on s.
Assist patients with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, and dressing.
Provide comf ort and emoti on al supp ort to patients and families.
M edical Administrati on :
Administer prescribed medicati on s and treatments, observing for side effects or reacti on s.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.
Collaborate with phy sic ians, surge on s, and other healthcare providers to coordinate patient care plans.
Prepare patients for surgical procedures and ensure proper recovery after surgery.
M on itoring and Rep ort ing:
Observe patients’ resp on ses to treatments, changes in symptoms, and complicati on s.
Rep ort any significant changes in patient c on diti on s to phy sic ians or senior nurses.
Maintain knowledge of patient charts and documentati on according to hospital policy.
Patient Educati on :
Educate patients and their families on health c on diti on s, treatment plans, and recovery processes.
Provide guidance on home care, medicati on regimens, and lifestyle modificati on s.
Infecti on C on trol and Safety:
Adhere to strict infecti on c on trol protocols.
M on itor patients for signs of infecti on , particularly after surgery.
Ensure the safety and comf ort of patients during their hospital stay.
Team Collaborati on :
Work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, which may include doctors, phy sic al therapists, and other nurses.
Participate in shift handoffs and communicate effectively with other team members about patient needs and status.
Emergency Resp on se:
Resp on d appropriately to medical emergencies, including assisting in life-saving procedures when required .
Use critical thinking skills to assess and react to changes in patient status.
Qualificati on s and Requirements:
Educati on : Registered Nurse (RN) with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Licensure: Valid state RN license.
Certificati on s: BLS (Ba sic Life Supp ort ) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Supp ort ) may be required .
Experience: Previous experience in a medical-surgical unit is often preferred.
Skills: Str on g clinical assessment skills, ability to work in a fast-paced envir on ment, excellent communicati on , and interpers on al skills.
Work Envir on ment:
Work is typically performed in hospital settings such as medical-surgical units, post-operative recovery units, or step-down units.
Nurses may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the hospital's staffing needs.
