Job Description

Job Description

The University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology is offering a 1-year clinical fellowship as a unique educational opportunity for the acquisition of practical expertise in advanced radiation modalities. This is a non-ACGME fellowship, and the candidate selected will be given a faculty appointment as an Instructor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

The fellowship is designed to develop professional competence in the care of patients undergoing radiation therapy, with a special focus on enhancing technical skills in advanced radiation modalities. These include proton treatment at our state-of-the-art Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC), SRS, SBRT, brachytherapy (prostate and Gyn), hyperthermia, and GammaPod(tm) stereotactic radiation therapy system for early-stage breast cancer. Trainees entering the program will have varying background and comfort levels with advanced treatment techniques.

Incoming trainees will have the opportunity to discuss and identify clinical experiences they are interested in learning. They will have the opportunity to select from the following training areas: Disease site specific Proton Therapy (CNS/BOS, HN, Thoracic, Breast, GI, GU, GYN); SRS (Linac and Gamma Kinfe); SBRT; Brachytherapy (Prostate LDR and HDR, Gyn); Hyperthermia; GammaPod(tm). There will be a focused curriculum including didactics, participation in patient care including simulation, treatment planning, and one-on-one review of cases.

Although the focus of the fellowship is clinical, the fellow will have opportunities to participate in our robust research program. Trainees will have dedicated and protected research time with mentoring from clinical and physics faculty. They will have access to biostatistics and writing support. Trainees will also have access to all departmental educational opportunities (including 4-5 visiting professors annually) and ABR board preparation experiences (including oral boards prep with faculty). For those interested, additional research time may be supported.

Qualifications

Applicants must be graduating residents from an ACGME-accredited residency in radiation oncology. This is a 1-year program. Applicants are expected to be board-eligible in radiation oncology at the time they begin the fellowship. Exceptional international applicants who have completed a radiation oncology residency may be considered, depending on certification, and/or licensing status. Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work without an employer sponsored visa. The Fellow must obtain a Maryland Physician license and Maryland Controlled and Dangerous Substance license by the start of the fellowship.

Interested candidates are invited to apply with a letter of interest, CV, and 3 references (or letters of reference).
